Anatomy of the Knee Joint
In a normal knee, Normal cartilage provides a smooth surface so bones can move easily across each other and a high concentration of hyaluronan in synovial fluid cushions and lubricates the joint. In a knee affected by OA, cartilage is eroded. If completely worn away, bones my scrape painfully against each other. Low concentration of hyaluronan in synovial fluid less able to protect the joint, and Osteophytes (bone spurs) may form.
The knee is one of the most complex joints of the human body. It not only bends back and forth like a hinge, but it also rotates when we bend or straighten our leg. It is a major weight-bearing joint that is supported by muscles, ligaments and soft tissue. Cartilage provides shock absorption which protects the tissues during movement.
